Interview with Nas 02/94 Pre Illmatic with Rich Nice and Option 8 (drafted from response to a comment)Thanks for asking. I was right out of school, my first interview was supposed to be Black Moon, but Buck just had his seed, so we pushed it back. So Nas was my 2nd actual interview. I like to share the blessings I get, and I knew my boy Ev was as much a Hip Hop fien' as me, so I asked him to come thru. This was about Feb of '94. As I get to the Sony Records in Manhattan with Ev, and my girl and her friend in tow I spot Nas walking away from the building with a girl. Not about to has this one be missed due to rapper time, I step to him like...umm you know we got an interview right? He responded that he wouldn't be long, and would return. True to his word, about an hour later we sat in an office with him and did the interview that ran about 1 1/2hrs. As we waited we were treated well by a cant named Miguel (good lookin out) who was a publicist up there; and I saw a Gold Record plaque for EPMD (who still are and always will be the shit!). I've condensed parts of the interview and tried to find clips that coinside with the topics covered. Kind of like the B.I.G. interview I have it's easy to build around because they talk in picturesque speech with a truth backed up by photos of their lives. There is a photo with him giving a pound to a dude in a green army jacket, that's my boy E, and the other Nas. He was dressed in a black sweater, good knit, i looked warm. Heavy coat, I think it was a snorkle, rockin a knit headband over the face. Overall, I found him to be real cool. As a fan and not just someone who was a fan beginning with him; there have been many artists who come before that I still think of as the truth but on a different level, I felt that I was able to ask some questions that were relavent not just to the task at hand, but to him as well. I can say as the first expedition I got to lead as a writer, it was a positive experience. He was as I expected him to be from what I heard, and looking back at his career I can appreciate the artistry even if I didn't always like the picture. On a side note, this was also the first time I met Puff. If you can recall from 'Last Real Nigga Alive' off of GodSon he mentioned that Puff wanted to manage him. Well, this was just such an occasion, I believe possibly the first night they met. I have different reccolections than Ev as we speak about it today. We both acknowledge that he was the first to speak and seemed...the reception was good. But I seem to recall us having to wrap some shit up, and getting a funny look.
